Vitamin C “is powerless” in battle against colds

July 22, 2007

BEIJING, July 18 — Taking vitamin C to combat colds is a waste of time, scientists have revealed. They found that the supplements, commonly perceived to be a tonic for winter ills, have little preventative effect and are no use at dealing with symptoms.

Only marathon runners, skiers and others exposed to extreme cold or stress for short periods should bother taking the pills, the study showed.

The researchers based their conclusions on an analysis of 30 studies carried out over six decades and involving more than 11,000 patients.

‘It just doesn’t make sense to take vitamin C 365 days a year to lessen the chance of catching a cold,’ they insisted.

Although the results were based on supplement use, the researchers said drinking orange juice or eating an orange - both good sources of vitamin C - were equally useless.

Their review, published in the Cochrane Library, a respected medical journal, looked at whether those who regularly took vitamin C tablets were less likely to catch colds than others. It also assessed the extent and duration of the symptoms when daily takers did catch a cold.

All those studied took at least two grams of the vitamin a day - around four times the dose normally found in supplements in shops.

Analysis of the figures, drawn from studies conducted around the world, revealed the pills had little benefit. It found that those taking a daily dose of vitamin C were just two per cent less likely to catch a cold. Their symptoms would clear up only marginally more quickly.

The researchers, from the University of Helsinki in Finland and the Australian National University in Canberra, said this would equate to the average person suffering a cold for 11 days a year instead of 12.

‘It would not seem reasonable to ingest vitamin C regularly throughout the year if the only anticipated benefit is to rather slightly shorten the duration of colds which occur for adults two or three times per year,’ they said.

The study also showed that starting to take the vitamin at the first sign of symptoms did little to hasten recovery.

It did find, however, that the vitamin benefited marathon runners, skiers and soldiers training in the Arctic, suggesting it is beneficial if the body is under extreme stress. Last night British experts said vitamin C is likely to benefit only those lacking it in the first place.

Hugh Pennington, a leading microbiologist from Aberdeen University, said the research showed that vitamin pills or even a glass or two of orange juice do little to dry up the sniffles.

However, taking them will not do any harm - and simple belief that they work could still help sufferers feel better, he said.

‘I am not surprised they found that vitamin C was no help, I think that the public’s faith in vitamins is slightly misplaced,’ he said. ‘If you want to take orange juice and it makes you feel good, so much the better. But it isn’t going to make your cold go away any quicker.’ Advising cold sufferers to ‘grin and bear it’, he warned: ‘I don’t think there is any treatment out there that will do anything for a cold.

‘Colds are caused by many different viruses. By the time you have got a runny nose, fever or sore throat it is probably a bit on the late side, even if there was something that would work. You’ve really just got to stick it out.’

Scientists recently concluded that echinacea, another widely-used cold remedy, really does work.

The U. S. review of 14 research studies concluded that daily doses of extracts of the plant - also known as the purple coneflower - can cut the chances of catching a cold by more than half.

It also reduced the duration of a cold by 1.4 days among those using it as a treatment, said researchers from University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy.

Cold comfort, but no cure

July 21, 2007

The lack of reliable remedies for the common cold means most aim to soothe symptoms while the immune system is left to tackle the virus, a battle it usually wins in a week or two. There are more than 200 cold viruses, and up to half of colds are caused by rhinoviruses that specifically infect the nose.Of the more modern medications, nasal sprays containing xylometazoline or oxymetazoline can clear up a blocked nose by damping down inflammation of the sensitive tissues. Antihistamines, though designed to reduce allergies, may also help by drying out a runny nose.

Traditional remedies have long used natural extracts. Echinacea was commonly taken by Native Americans and may help ward off colds by stimulating the immune system.Ginseng has been shown by some small studies to reduce the risk of picking up a cold and lessen the severity of infection. Menthol and eucalyptus have been used for hundreds of years to relieve congestion and sore throats.

The Victorians favoured a footbath with two tablespoons of dried mustard powder for relieving nasal and chest congestion, and there is evidence that spicy food and hot drinks may help a relieve sore throat or cough.

An investigation by scientists at the University of Nebraska suggested chicken soup might help soothe inflammation and relieve congestion.

A series of peculiar studies by scientists at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania revealed that mental state played a role in susceptibility to colds. Happy people, they found, were three times less likely to get one than their more miserable counterparts, a finding they attributed to stress levels being lower among the happy group.

You never know what wonders things from your bathroom cabinet can do or so it would seem. There are people out there who swear toothpaste cures zits and Vicks vaporub fixes cracked feet.

“Though there is no substantial evidence to prove that these remedies are effective, I do know that they are popular and have been known to work on people who have used them,” says general practitioner Dr Porus Kapadia.

Toothpaste Try applying a bit of toothpaste to a zit that pops up right before a big day. Be careful use only white paste. Gels and whitening pastes contain high levels of hydrogen peroxide that might burn your skin.

Apart from being the 10-minute cure for a headache, Disprin is said to be an effective remedy to treat a sore throat. The toothpaste is most effective when used on the pimple when the whitehead has been formed. Utsa Sharma, an IT professional, says, “I always have a huge, visible mount in the middle of my forehead before an important day, be it a presentation or a meeting.

The toothpaste dries it up and makes it less visible”.

Vicks You know what else is a common problem in the winter other than a cold? Cracked feet.

Ranjita Singh, housewife, says, “I get so caught up with work around the house that I end up running around barefoot most of the times. I think I have tried all creams claim ing to treat cracked heels but noth ing worked. Once I was feeling very cold so I rubbed some Vicks on my feet. Voila, I had soft feet the next morning. I use it regularly now.”

Next time you rub Vaporub on your chest, rub some on your feet too. And then cover them up with socks.

Instead of swallowing the pill, try a gargle with a mediumsized glass of warm water with a Disprin dissolved in it. It will relieve the pain, and the cough, and you have effectively not ingested any drug either.

Milk of Magnesia We all know that Milk of Magnesia cures constipation. Maybe it’s the same principle of flushing-out that makes it very effective to treat skin problems.

Applying Milk of Magnesia in an area affected by an allergy or acne is very effective. Cosmetologist Dr Blossom Kocchar also recommends it in a remedy for severe acne.

Take one teaspoon of Milk of Magnesia and mix it with one teaspoon of water. Leave it on for five minutes and then rinse off with water.

Follow this up with an application of a paste composed of one egg white and mashed garlic. Wait for this to dry and then wash off.

This remedy is supposed to work wonders. Milk of magnesia flushes out the toxins, the egg white helps the skin to dry up and garlic acts as an antiseptic.

Saliva You can fight fire with fire. For acne problems, apply saliva first thing in the morning. Yes, your own stinky, stale, saliva. The bacteria present in your mouth - probably the same that rot your teeth and gums - is effective in killing the bacteria that cause your acne infection.

Words healing wounds

July 6, 2007

Mickey Basner, of Woodmere, writes from experience. Because of his stroke two years ago, he said he understands the tough road to recovery for soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan who have suffered traumatic brain injuries.

Jim Cockren, of Hicksville, who was in a coma for three weeks after a medical accident, empathizes with the more than 20 percent of wounded soldiers who, according to ongoing medical studies, have received brain injuries, mostly from roadside bombings.

The two are members of a traumatic brain injury support group who wrote letters of encouragement to U.S. soldiers now coping with war-related brain injuries. The letters, most of them painfully scrawled by participants with vision loss, were written at a group therapy session sponsored by the Jewish Community Center of the Greater Five Towns.

Officials at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., have seen an avalanche of letters from across the nation, and while they welcome support, they urge groups to channel their messages through Web sites such as americasupportsyou.com. Although it’s unclear whether hospitalized soldiers have seen the letters by Basner, 70, or Cockren, 53, the act of consoling the soldiers is empowering and therapeutic for members, said Lisa Barnett, a social worker who conducts the sessions.

Namibia: Suffer Little Children

June 30, 2007

The bowels of the concrete-walled water drainage pipes running beneath the busy Mandume Ndemufayo Road in the southern industrial area of Windhoek light up every night from a low fire fuelled by plastic bags and shards of wooden planks.

A motley group of boys huddle around the flames for warmth against the bitingly cold night temperatures.

These pipes provide shelter to about 14 or 16 boys between the ages of 11 and 19. They call it the Invisible Pipes.

Winter temperatures have fallen to between minus one degree Celsius to three degrees Celsius over the last week in the central city area, confirmed Rian van Zyl from the weather office. And another cold spell is likely to hit again next week.

The icy conditions are taking their toll on the homeless and destitute. Wintertime to these boys is synonymous with sore and stiff bodies, constant flu and wheezing chests.

“We do not have any blankets,” says Ricardo Jones, a 14-year-old runaway from Mariental.

One or two of the boys claim to have blankets that they have either stolen or were given by sympathetic members of the public.

But the others wrap themselves in plastic bags, cardboard boxes, or pieces of cloth gathered from the Game shopping mall during the day. Their mattresses are more plastic bags and cardboard boxes.

“Wintertime is a very unpleasant time of the year for us,” says Robert Benson (16). “It keeps away the sleep at night.”

“I think I will freeze to death this winter,” says Willem Frederik (19). His face is puffed up from drink and slowly-healing knife cuts criss-cross his face, and he has an open and bleeding wound on one arm “from a fight with gangsters”.

As night falls, he puts on a thin, frayed shirt over his red sweater.

And, say the boys, the City Police make their lives more difficult in winter.

“They go after us especially now. In summer they do not bother us,” said Carlos Benson.

City Police Assistant Superintendent, Marx Hipandwa, responded by saying that the children should not view this as victimization, but that they are being picked up “for their own good - irrespective of the season”.

After traversing the streets at night, the boys return to the pipes around midnight.

They then light the fire, and cook whatever food they could gather during the day from small jam cans.

“We always sit together around the fire to chat and play cards,” says Daniel Swartbooi (23). He is the assigned cook of the group.

They eat once a day - if at all.

Their staple diet consists mostly of porridge and dry bread that they get from their “sponsors”.

Or they add their pennies together that they have collected from begging or stealing, and buy special treats like sugar to add to their nightly teas.

But if they cannot find food in the day, they rummage through garbage bins for whatever scraps of food they can find.

“We scratch through the bins the whole day,” says Rudolph Afrikaner (16).

Volunteers from a local church bring them soup every Friday.

Other times they go to Klein Windhoek where they hunt birds.

“It is like eating chicken,” laughs Benson.

When they are ready to sleep, they kill the fire because of the smoke.

Another group of four boys live behind the Game shopping mall, opposite a railway line that cuts through the thinly-spread bushes.

“This is Paradise,” says Carlos Benson (23), the oldest of the group.

Internet Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at reasanoble prices.Internet Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order pharmacy via internet.

They call this place Paradise because it is close to a river from which they get sufficient water in the rainy season.

In winter, the cold creeps up to their hilltop cardboard shelter set up under a tree.

10 Tips to Prevent Children’s Cold and Flu

June 23, 2007

Colds are a fact of life for many children but they don’t have to be. Savvy parents are using natural remedies to avoid colds and flu or shorten the duration of the irritating illnesses. Children under six have an average of seven colds a year while older children tend to have four or five. They can catch a cold anytime but most colds occur between October and February. If a child’s temperature goes above 102?F, the child is likely suffering from the flu and not a cold. You can break this cycle by building your child’s immune system with diet, herbs and vitamins. Then they will be less likely to fall victim to the viruses that cause colds and flu. Here’s how you can sidestep sneezes and curtail coughs this summer. To Avoid Cold and Flu:
Boost your child’s immune system and ease a sore throat by giving a total of one dose of Zinc in chewable tablet or lozenge form each day for three days. Birth-6 mos. 4 mg.; 6-12 mos. 6 mg.; 13 mos.-11 years 10 mg.; 12-18 years 15 mg.

Administer another immune system booster - American Ginseng. As long as fever or other signs of acute infection are NOT present, give your child one dose, once or twice weekly
during the winter months.
Keep Echinacea and Goldenseal on hand. Both stimulate the immune system and keep the body clear of infections. Echinacea is antibacterial and antiviral. Goldenseal is an antibacterial noted for healing irritated mucous membranes. Give your child one dose of an echinacea-goldenseal combination formula twice weekly during cold and flu season. If a cold occurs, give one dose three times a day for five days to a week.
Give your child one dose of Beta Carotene daily during cold and flu season as a preventive measure. The body uses beta-carotene to manufacture vitamin A which helps heal mucous membranes. Should a cold occur, give a double dose of beta-carotene twice daily for five to seven days. Birth-12 mos. 2,000 IU; 13 mos.-4 years 2,500 IU; 5-6 years 3,000 IU; 7-11 years 4,000 IU; 12-19 years 5,000 IU.
Supplement with 150 mg. of Vitamin C a day during cold and flu season, especially if your child resists eating fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties and will help ease the course of a cold.

Internet Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at reasanoble prices.Internet Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order pharmacy via internet.

If a cold occurs, administer one dose of vitamin C three times a day for three days. Birth-6 mos. 40 mg.; 6-12 mos. 60 mg.; 13 mos.-2 years 100 mg.; 3-6 years 150 mg.;7-11 years 200-500 mg.; 12-18 years 300-500 mg.
Prepare soups with chicken and vegetables and add the herb Astragalus in dried or tincture form to boost immunity during cold and flu season. Children with a cold and fever are easily dehydrated so be sure they drink plenty of liquids. All fluids, including soups, help thin secretions making it easier for the body to clear them. But steer clear of drinks containing sugars such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey or orange juice. These greatly reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria.
If Your Child Catches Cold:
Give your child one odorless Garlic capsule two to three times a day for one week. Garlic has antibacterial properties and helps detoxify the body.
Make sure your child drinks Ginger tea to increase perspiration. This helps cleanse the body and reduce the intensity of a cold. Give one dose every four hours during the acute phase of a cold.
Try a cup of Sage tea which helps break up congestion and bring down a fever. Give your child one dose of sage tea up; to three times daily for three to five days.
At the very first sign of a cold, give your child 1/3 tube of the homeopathic remedy Anas barbariae (sold under various brand names including Oscillococcinum) three times daily for one day. As a preventive measure, administer one dose of Anas barbariae once a week during cold and flu season

Rosie O’Donnell wants ‘Price’ job

June 21, 2007

“The Price Is Right” needs a host, and Rosie O’Donnell is interested. Very interested. The 45-year-old said on her blog recently that she was meeting with the “Price” people this week and that she “sure would” accept the job if they offer.

“I LOVE THE PRICE IS RIGHT,” she wrote, the capitalization underscoring her feelings.

CBS and FremantleMedia North America, which produces the hit game show, have been seeking a replacement for the venerable Bob Barker, who retired this month after 35 years as the show’s host.

Among those reportedly in the running are Todd Newton of the E! network, Mark Steines of “Entertainment Tonight,” George Hamilton and John O’Hurley. But Barker said O’Donnell is his pick.

“She knows the show,” he said backstage at Friday’s Daytime Emmy Awards. “There’s no doubt in my mind she could do the show. Now, whether they want a lady host, I don’t know. I’ve never heard that discussed. As far as I know, they’ve only auditioned men.”

CBS and FremantleMedia had no comment Tuesday.

O’Donnell’s spokeswoman, Cindi Berger, was not specific about the ex-”View” commentator’s plans: “Rosie is meeting with several networks about a lot of different ideas.”

“The Price Is Right” is filmed in Los Angeles. O’Donnell lives in Nyack, New York, near New York City, with her partner and their four children.

Treating a Cold with Home Remedies

June 2, 2007

Acute viral nasopharyngitis more commonly known as the common cold is the most common occurring illness through out the world. The cold is a viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory system. On average an adult will be infected 2 to 4 times a year by the common cold and school ages children on average are infected up to 12 times a year. Symptoms of the common cold include sneezing, sniffling, nasal congestion, runny nose, coughing, headache, fatigue, and scratchy or sore throat. Some cases of the common cold may also include red, itchy, and/or watery eyes although this is not very common. A cold usually lasts for 3 to 5 days. You should see you doctor if your symptoms continue for more than 5 days become worse or you are suffering from a fever, chills, and/or body aches these symptoms could mean you have the flu.Home Remedies for treating a cold include:

1. Get plenty of rest. Take a day off and make sure to get a full nights sleep and plenty of rest during the day. If you take the day off when you first notice symptoms it may help you avoid taking several days off.

2. Drink plenty of clear liquids including water, apple juice, and chicken broth. It is recommended that you eat a little even if you do not have much of an appetite try eating an orange or strawberries which contain high amounts of vitamin C or just eat a small bowl of chicken noodle soup.

3. Avoid products that contain caffeine and nicotine. Both caffeine and nicotine have been shown to impair your body’s immune system. Also you may want to cut dairy and sugar out of your diet for a couple days as well. Dairy products and high sugar foods increase mucus and lead to can cause congestion or make it much worse if it is already present.

4. Drink tea with homey or try making tea with ginger, lemon and honey. First boil some water, while the water is boiling grate a 1 inch piece of ginger root. If you have a thermos get it out and put the grated ginger into it then add $ Tbsp. of lemon juice and 3 Tbsp. of honey or to taste. Add the boiling water to the thermos. Put on the cap and let set for about 20 to 25 minutes. Strain into a cup with a tea bag and drink.

5. Take a hot bath or shower this will help loosen and break up mucus and also help relieve you from nasal and chest congestion.

6. Keep yourself warm by staying indoors and under the covers. Also be sure to wear warm clothing especially when you need to get out from under the covers. Keep a warm bathrobe and slippers right beside the bed.

7. Use a vaporizer if you have nasal or chest congestion. The warm vapors can help loosen mucus. You may also want to use some Vick’s Vapor Rub or the shower soothers that are now available.

8. When you are not using the vaporizer turn on a humidifier. The moisture that is added to the air will make your nasal tissue more moist and help you be more comfortable.

Internet Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at reasanoble prices.Internet Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order pharmacy via internet.

9. Add small amounts of cinnamon to your food, you can make cinnamon toast or add a cinnamon powder or a stick to your tea or even hot apple cider.

10. Drink a cup of peppermint tea or even add a few peppermint tea bags to your hot bath water. This may help unblock your sinuses if you have nasal congestion.

11. If you have a cough use Thyme. Prepare a cup of tea with some Thyme, let steep for about 15 minutes. Strain out the Thyme and sweeten with honey if desired. Store in the refrigerator and take 1 tsp. every hour. Only use this remedy for 1 to 2 days.

12. Prepare a steam treatment by boiling 2 cups of water, in a large bowl or basin add some eucalyptus. Pour the hot water over the eucalyptus. Cover your head with a towel and lean over the bowl and slowly breath in the steam. As the mucus is loosened blow your nose gently, continue to do this for about 5 minutes. Use caution when doing this as steam can burn you and you should also close your eyes to avoid eye irritation.

13. Take Enchinacea. Take 1 to 2 capsules every three hours for the first 2 days. Then reduce your dosage to 6 capsules a day. It is recommended that you do not use this treatment for more than 10 days.

14. Take some Vitamin C and Zinc lozenges this can reduce the length of the cold.

15. Use disposable tissue instead of handkerchiefs. Flush the paper tissues after using them, the cold virus can live up to several hours which can increase the risk of reinfecting yourself or others.

16. Wash your hands frequently to reduce the chances of spreading the virus to others around you and the chance of re infecting yourself.

For best results it is strongly recommended that you use a combination of these treatments. Getting plenty of rest, drinking clear liquids, eating food rich in vitamin C, alternating between steam and a humidifier, and frequently washing your hands combined should work well to prevent spreading o the cold and reduce y the length of it.
